Why summer camp?

Why summer camp?

Attending summer camp with your troop is central to a Scout’s experience and growth in the Scouting program. The week in camp provides an opportunity for you to bond with other Scouts in Troop 506 and with the natural world.

It is also an exceptional time for advancement. Summer camp provides you the best of what we have to offer of our program in leadership development AND gives you an opportunity to earn Eagle required merit badges.

For our Scouts solidly on the Trail to Eagle, both of these summer camps offer really awesome high adventure options. For example, Strake’s high adventure program includes high-ropes course, zipline, ATV trail riding, shooting sports, mountain biking, Dutch oven cooking, boating and aquatics activities.

For Our Newest Scouts

For Scouts who are just joining our troop, whether you are Webelos who will cross over to our troop soon, or entirely new to Scouting, both Camp Strake and Camp Alexander offer a First Year Camper / Trail to First Class program.

New Scouts will be camping with their troop and participating in activities that will work towards First Class rank. For both camps, a Scout may choose to participate in a new camper / Trail to First Class program and focus on Scout skill development or choose to work on merit badges.

The Trail to Eagle is through Summer Camp

To earn Eagle Scout, a Scout must earn a total of 21 merit badges, 14 of which are specific Eagle required badges. A Scout who attends both summer camps offered by Troop 506 will have the opportunity to earn or make significant progress towards 8 of the 14 Eagle required merit badges.

Most Scouts who attend summer camp may earn up to SIX merit badges PER CAMP, including Eagle-required type merit badges and others.

A Scout working towards Eagle who attends both summer camps this summer could complete more than half of their merit badge requirements for the Eagle Scout rank.
